Week 1 Summaries
SUPERBAS WALLOP KNIGHTS IN INAUGURAL PFL CONTEST 2-11-02(AP) Peanut- A capacity crowd of Dan Stout watched the first game in PFL history as Mike McCarthy's Cooperstown Superbas triumphed over Alex Sipe's Wood St. Heights Knights. The Knights were able to overcome their nerves, but could not shake a questionable kicking game and faulty red zone offense. Cooperstown took advantage of early mistakes by the Knights to grab a 32-16 halftime lead.
Wood St. Heights closed the gap to 10 points with the opening second half touchdown, but was unable to sustain any momentum or stop the offensive onslaught of the Superbas. Cooperstown scored 57 points in the second half, more than the Knights could muster the whole game. The final score was 89-43 in favor of Cooperstown. Alex Sipe guarantees better games from his Knights in subsequent contests. Wood St. Heights will get their chance at revenge tomorrow at 12:10 pm in Caldwell Memorial Stadium.
COOPERSTOWN "SUPERB" IN VICTORY 2-12-02(AP)Peanut- Mike McCarthy wasn't even sure if his Cooperstown Superbas would make it to today's game. But make it they did. The Superbas ran up 50 points in the first half, including a 26-0 run, and never looked back on their way to a 98-62 victory over the Wood St. Heights Knights.
"We played a clean, consistent game," said McCarthy. "We put ourselves in scoring position on almost every drive."
"Wow," was all Alex Sipe could muster after today's dismantling. His Knights opened up the second half with a flurry of scores, and closed the gap to 59-49. The Knights began to stall in the red zone, however. That gave the Superbas an opening, and they poured right through. When the dust cleared, the Superbas had come within 2 points of the century mark.
"I think," said McCarthy afterwards, "this leaves little doubt as to who the dominant force in the PFL is."
KNIGHTS GO THE DISTANCE TO SPEAR SUPERBAS: FIRST PFL OT GAME
2-13-02(AP)Peanut- In what was sure to be a vision of things to come in the future, The Wood St. Heights Knights edged the Cooperstown Superbas in the most competitive PFL game to date. Neither team ever led by more than ten points the entire game. "We really stuck with the Superbas," said Coach Alex Sipe. And after sticking around the whole game, the Knights were able to win in overtime by a score of 64-58.
"I'm disappointed, to say the least," said a dejected Mike McCarthy after the game. "I just didn't have a good feeling about today."
Competition was close the entire afternoon, and play was a little sloppy in the first half. The Superbas jumped out to a shaky 27-23 lead after one period of play. The Knights, however, played a solid second half to even the score at 58-58 at the end of regulation. Cooperstown won the coin toss to begin the overtime, but the extra time was all Wood St. Heights. The Knights missed a long field goal on their first drive, but didn't disappoint on their second. "I had a good feeling after that kick," said Sipe. He had an even better feeling after the Knights scored a touchdown on their next drive. They pulled within a game of Cooperstown in the PFL standings, and squelched any talk that play would be a one-sided affair.
COOPERSTOWN EXPLODES IN SECOND HALF TO GRAB VICTORY: KNIGHTS KICK IT AWAY
2-14-02(AP)Peanut- On Valentine's Day, the Cooperstown Superbas played coy most of the first half, but bolted out of the gaits in the second half to steal an 84-60 victory from the Wood St. Knights.
The Knights could have held a 34-13 lead after the first half, but failed to capitalize on any kicks, missing three PAT's and two field goals. The last miss allowed the Superbas to score a touchdown as the first half expired and close the gap to 25-20.
"The way we had been playing," said Coach McCarthy, "I wasn't sure if we would be able to put up thirty points the whole game." And until the final first half score, it looked like that might be the case. Fortunately for Superbas fans, however, Cooperstown stormed out in the second half, scoring 27 straight points. The Knights would make a game of it, bringing the score to 67-60 with less than two minutes remaining in the game. But the Superbas would add two more touchdowns and a field goal to finish with 64 points in the second half and seal the victory.
"The game was alot closer than it looked, you have to give the Knights credit," McCarthy said afterward, "but thank goodness our offense found its rhythm in the second half."
SUPERBAS CRUSH KNIGHTS: SCORE 70 IN SECOND HALF
2-15-02(AP)Peanut-"I'm happy," Alex Sipe said after the game. But it wasn't because of a Knights victory. No the Knights didn't even come close to that. But Cooperstown came close to something else. "Mike didn't get to 100," deadpanned the Wood St. coach.
The Superbas were as close to perfect as a team could get in the second half. Close to perfect because they missed an early extra point that would have given them 100 points. Its the second time in four games that the Superbas have come within two points of the century mark.
The game started slowly and sloppily for both teams. Missed kicks and poor offenses were the story for the combatants. The Superbas took a slim 29-19 lead into the second half, where the Knights narrowed the gap to three points. From there on out, however, the story was all Cooperstown. The Superbas finished the game on a 63-7 run. Today's game was as close to total domination as the PFL has seen. "I expect to reach 100 points next week," said Mike McCarthy. "The Superbas are not here to lose."
